A book is coming!

To my loyal readers,

Many of you who comment, or read the comments, know that there have been requests for a book. Well, it’s happening!

My son Jay and I have signed an agreement with a publisher and the book will be released early next year. If you are on Facebook, go to “On Being a Cop” and “like” the page to keep updated on the progress and for some pre-release offers.

The book will contain many stories from this blog, some updated and expanded as well as new stories written specifically for the book. Jay has penned about 20 additional tales that I like to call “staccato stories.” They are short, but no less intense and offer perfect punctuation to many of my stories.

I would be remiss if I did not thank all of you for your loyal readership and support. The blog was indeed the origin of all of this and it will remain in place, but the pressures of getting a book ready for publication may keep me from posting new stories as regularly as I would like.

Again, thanks for your loyalty, support and encouragement of the past few years. It has been the trip of a lifetime!

Good for you Jim, by writing your stories you tell our stories. When I read one, it’s not just a great story, it’s also a feeling, like I’m back on the street responding to the call or at the scene, sometimes hilarious, sometimes bittersweet, but always real. Thank you, it will be a great book

  13. Rory says:

Congrats On The Book! I stop by and read from time to time and love the stories. I always thought my father should have written a book about his career with cpd. I love the old timers. Thanks for sharing. I will buy a copy.

  14. Barry Felcher, NBC5News, retired says:

I expect you will win the National Book Award for this effort. Looking forward to buying a copy.

  17. Joanna Trotter says:

I’d heard through the grapevine, congratulaions. I wish you even more success with the book then you recieved with the blog and that’s a lot! Joanna T. from IAHC write class.

  18. Tom Nangle says:

Jay and you are doing the CPD a favor by telling anyone who’s interested about the unseen competence and unnoticed passion of the department’s very best resource: its officers. The average civilian’s only glimpse behind the blue curtain is via TV or novels or from a brief encounter with the beat car; you two will pull the curtain back and hold it open, and folks love to get a peek at that ‘secret’ world. I think that officers who live behind that curtain will have their souls tickled by being reminded of what a profound effect that good police work has on the quality of big city life. Glad you’re doing this, and all the best to da bodayooz.

    • jimpadar says:

Thanks so much Tom. You are the first one to get a sneak peek at Jay’s material and I’m so glad you enjoyed it. It should be a great addition to the book!

  19. jamesfaye@comcast.net says:

    Congrats….Looking forward to reading it

  20. DENNIS P. MURPHY says:

    Jim,
Looking forward to your (and Jay’s) book. It’s not necessary to offer a police discount, most of us will gladly pay full price for a change!!

    • Phil Retired CPD says:

Speak for yourself Dennis! Most of us are on a fixed income! Although I’d stand in line for a book signing……with my walker of course! (Weather permitting) 🙂

      • jimpadar says:

I’m thinking there just may be a special pre-sale offer… you know, limited time, while quantities last, sort of thing. And I’ll be sure to have a line for the handicrapped… and umbrellas!

    • jimpadar says:

It may take some doing, but I’ll see if I can possibly charge you full price. 🙂

  21. Maryann Sevening (CPD retired) says:

Looking forward to reading the new material and even a rehash of the old. You have a knack for expressing the best and worst of “the job”.

  22. Scott says:

Great news about the book, I’m looking forward to buying a copy and should be able to spend a snowy, lousy evening with a couple tumblers of small batch bourbon and some good reading.

Looking forward to saying hello at the steak lunch next week.
